SUMMARY:Washington County Master Gardeners April Speaker - Susan Betz
DESCRIPTION:Hello Master Gardeners and Friends\, \n  \nOur April Meeting will be a Zoom Presentation held on Thursday April 11\, at 6:00PM CST. \n  \nOur speaker is Susan Betz\, and her topic is Neighboring With Nature – Native Herbs for Purpose and Pleasure. \n  \nSusan will provide gardening information for people eager to foster a closer relationship with their local landscapes by planting gardens designed both for their ecological and aesthetic values. “We have reached the point where our plantings can no longer be just ornamental or edible; we need to explore ways to increase natural areas and enhance biological diversity by connecting neighborhood gardens\, yards\, and community green spaces. This will reduce habitat fragmentation and provide a safe place for movement of the plants and pollinators that help maintain healthy ecosystems. The diversity of native herbs can offer something of interest to satisfy the mind\, body\, and spirit of every type of person. Along with all those attributes\, wherever they grow\, native and nonnative herbs contribute to the development of sustainable earth-friendly communities by attracting beneficial insects\, birds\, and other wildlife. “ \n  \nSusan Betz has been actively involved in growing and using herbs to educate the public about gardening and the natural world for over 35 years. She is an Honorary Master Gardener\, a member of the International Herb Association\, Garden Communicators\, the Ecological Landscape Alliance and National Garden Bureau Susan is a life member of the Herb Society of America and received The Society’s Helen D. Conway Little Medal of Honor in 2018. She is a charter member of HSA’s Native Herb Conservation committee\, the Society’s sustainable garden initiative. Susan currently serves on HSA’s Notable Native Herb program and is a contributing author to HSA’s native herb fact sheets published annually.
